The ScoopSeven summer beauty and skincare tips

Summer is here, and it's time to turn up the heat on your beauty and skincare routine. As much as we love being outside in the summer sun, it takes a toll on our skin—creating challenges like dehydration, oiliness, breakouts, dark spots, clogged pores, and wrinkles (sigh). So keep these tips in mind to help pamper and protect your skin as you enjoy every moment of the warmer temperatures.

1- Stay hydrated

Nothing ruins a summer glow faster than dehydrated skin. If your skin doesn’t get enough water, it can become dry, tight, and more prone to aging. Make sure you're drinking enough water to keep your skin quenched. A general rule of thumb is to drink 6–8 glasses of water a day, but when you’re sweating in the summer sun, you may need even more water to prevent dehydration, regulate your body temperature, and maintain healthy skin.

2- Level up your SPF

Proper UV protection is by far the most important step in any skincare routine—especially in the summer. A good sunscreen helps prevent sunburn and premature aging, and more importantly, reduces your risk of sun damage and skin cancer. Most dermatologists recommend broad-spectrum sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher. Apply it generously and frequently, and don't forget those often neglected areas like your ears, lips, and the back of your hands.

3- Embrace a light moisturizer

Even when the weather is humid and sweaty, you still need to use a good moisturizer. Not only will it help hydrate your skin, but it will help strengthen the outer skin barrier which protects from harmful pollutants and prevents irritation and dryness. We’re fans of Rejuvenate: Advanced Hydrating Serum. Thanks to its lightweight texture, it will help keep that outer layer nourished without feeling too heavy or oily on your skin.

4- Show your summertime chic

When you’re in direct sunlight, be mindful to expose as little of your skin as possible. You don’t have to wear a long-sleeve shirt for a day at the beach, but consider sitting underneath an umbrella, and wearing a wide-brim hat and sunglasses in the middle of the day. Remember those harmful UV rays are the most extreme from 10 am–4 pm so look for shade and try to avoid sitting in the direct sunlight.

5- Cleanse twice a day

Between summer vacations, campouts, and pool days, it’s easy for your face-washing routine to get off track. However, the sun's powerful UV rays and hot temperatures can lead to increased oil production, clogged pores, and future breakouts if your skin isn’t properly cleansed. We recommend using a mild cleanser that doesn't contain drying alcohols, fragrances, or dyes. Our favorite is Rejuvenate: Soothing Daily Cleanser. Using it twice a day will help unclog your pores and gently remove dirt, oil, and makeup to keep your face clean, hydrated, and healthy right through the summer.

6- Refresh with a mist

When the heat becomes unbearable, reach for a refreshing face mist. Not only are they incredibly cooling, but they can be infused with skin-friendly ingredients like aloe vera or cucumber. Keep a bottle of your favorite mist handy for an instant cool down and hydration boost any time of day. You can even store your mist in the fridge for an extra-cooling boost.

7- Don’t forget your lips

Lips can quickly become dry, chapped, cracked, and painful when exposed to the sun's rays and hot temperatures. Applying lip balm with sunscreen is essential to keeping them healthy and moisturized in the summer months. It provides a physical barrier against the elements, as well as a thin layer of protection from harmful UV rays. Look for lip balms made with natural oils and hydrating ingredients like beeswax and shea butter, then apply them regularly.
